Echocardiographic measurements of the aorta

Echocardiography Textbook

Aorta can be measured at the different levels.

  • Fibrous annulus of the aorta (AoA)
  • Transaortic sinuses (AoSV)
  • Sinotubular junction (AoSTJ)
  • Proximal ascending aorta diameter (AoPxA)
  • Aortic arch (AoArch)
  • Descending aorta (AoDesc)
  • Abdominal aorta (AoAbd)

Determining the linear sizes of the Aorta at the level of the Annulus, Transaortic Sinuses, Ascending Aorta and Sinotubular junction is possible from the Left Parasternal view, Long axis.

The Transaortic Sinuses can also be measured from the Left Parasternal view, Short axis At the level of the Aortic Valve.

The Aortic arch and Descending aorta are measured from the Suprasternal Approach.

From the Subcostal Approach, it is possible to measure Linear Size of the Abdominal Aorta.
